The “eyes” have it!
Because dogs and cats rely on their keen senses to explore and enjoy their world, it’s important that they have optimal functioning of all their senses, including vision. A number of diseases can affect your pet’s eyes, including ulcers, glaucoma and cataracts, one of the most common eye diseases in dogs. And because many of our pets are curious creatures, they may poke their heads where they shouldn’t, which sometimes results in an eye injury.
In cases of disease, trauma or other conditions of the eye, your family veterinarian may determine that the best course of action is to have your pet seen by a veterinary ophthalmologist. Ophthalmologists are trained in the anatomy and function of the eye and offer both surgical and medical (non-surgical) interventions to treat diseases of the eye. And with expert training focused solely on the eye, an ophthalmologist is in the best position to help restore or improve your pet’s vision and ensure your pet is kept comfortable.
